As every year, the members of the Association of Young Korean Artists renew their group and come together to take on a new challenge: exploring a theme that allows each of them to view their work with a fresh perspective. Eager to better understand the phenomena of contemporary society, the artists here question the relationship to the media, particularly those considered alternative, while addressing the influence and consequences of these media that have become omnipresent in everyday life.
For the past decade, the public has preferred to get their information from social media networks rather than traditional journalistic media. Unfortunately, these new practices promote the circulation of sensationalist claims, often based on fake news and conspiracy theories. In this context, the word "infox," a neologism combining "information" and "intoxication," refers to misleading or intentionally deceptive information.
The proliferation of infox is even said to be responsible for the shift in our societies into a new era of "post-truth," a term coined in 1992 by Steve Tesich, a Serbo-American screenwriter and novelist. The term "post-truth" describes a situation where appearances outweigh facts, placing more importance on emotions and opinions than on the reality of the facts. This phenomenon is manifested by a growing indifference to the distinction between truth and falsehood.
According to Greimas and Courtés, linguists and semioticians, what both is and appears is true, while what is neither being nor appearing is false. They also develop the idea of what is secret and false in this relationship between being and appearing. The link between these two ways of conceiving reality is ambivalent because appearances reveal and conceal at the same time, and it becomes more interesting with the question of representation, image, reality, and illusions... that art raises.
The role of the artist, according to Jean-Paul Sartre, is to present the spectator with a portrait of their society, their reality, so that they can develop an awareness of their own condition and the multiple realities of their environment. The visual artist is there to make us see, make us hear, and raise questions, while inviting us to take the necessary distance from the media, which have the power to shape our vision of the world.
The exhibition Being and Appearing aims to challenge us on the "powers of the false," and perhaps to find the antidote that will restore our taste for the truth, through works by these young artists who engage the senses and emotions, defying a single thesis or interpretation.
The AJAC (Association of Young Korean Artists) is an organization founded in 1983 that brings together young Korean artists residing in France. Each year, it organizes a major annual exhibition in Paris of its active members. It also hosts collective exhibitions in France and abroad, often seeking to connect with artists from different backgrounds in a spirit of exchange and sharing. This year, the association has 19 active members and 8 new members who were admitted in the previous year.
